Mr. Roberto Antonione has taken on his role as CEI Secretary General as of 1 January 2019 upon the decision of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of November 2018 and acknowledgment by the Heads of Government on the occasion of the CEI Summit in Zagreb on 4 December 2018. He is succeeding Amb. Giovanni Caraccioli di Vietri who served the CEI-ES from 2013 to 2018.
A long-time friend and supporter of the CEI, from 2008 to 2013 Antonione acted as President of the Italian Parliamentary Delegation to the CEI as well as Chairman of the International Group of Experts for the CEI reform in 2010. During that same period, he was Member of the Chamber of Deputies (XVI Legislature), Group leader of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Secretary of the Parliamentary Delegation to the Council of Europe. He then held the post of Special Advisor to the CEI Secretary General (2015-2018) and CEI Chief Operating Officer in 2018.
