Strong growth in Latvia of 'brain business jobs'

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 21 JAN - Latvia, Hungary and Slovakia are the European countries that registered the highest growth in the concentration of 'brain business jobs' between 2014 and 2019, a new study said. According to recently released study 'The Geography of Europe's Brain Business Jobs', produced by the European Centre for Entrepreneurship and Policy Reform (ECEPR), Latvia registered an increase of 37.0% in jobs in knowledge-intensive firms between 2014 and 2019, followed by Hungary (+33.6%), Slovakia (+32.9%), Poland (29.3%) and Romania (+29.2%). The study analysed the share of working age population across Europe employed in highly knowledge-intensive enterprises. "Lower cost of labour and significant share of young people investing in higher education lead to a Brain Business surge in Central and Eastern European nations" in the last years, the report noted. Hungary, Latvia, Czechia and Slovenia together managed in the last five years to surpass France, Belgium and Austria in Brain Business Jobs concentration. The study also revealed that Sofia, Prague and Bucharest have strengthen their position as new "Brain Business Hubs," while the region around Bratislava is the one in Europe with the highest total share of "Brain Business Jobs per capita" (19% of the working age population). Currently, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom and Germany are at the top in Europe for the share of workforce in knowledge-intensive firms (more than 8% of the total workforce).
