Bulgaria gets EU promotion on rule of law and justice

(ANSA) - BRUXELLES, 22 OTT - Bulgaria has fulfilled its commitments to comply with EU standards in the areas of justice, the rule of law and the fight against corruption. The European Commission explained today that its Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (Cvm) will soon get to an end. In the last year Sofia has consolidated "its legal and institutional framework", Brussels wrote in its annual report, praising the Bulgarian government's commitment to reforms for judicial independence and the fight against corruption. The Commission notes, in particular, the commitment of the Bulgarian government to repeal provisions requiring the automatic suspension of magistrates in case of a criminal investigation against them and the reporting of membership in professional associations. The EU Commission will now listen to the Parliament and the European Council's opinions. The final decision will be likely taken under the leadership of the newly elected president Ursula von der Leyen. According to the EU Commission's report, Bulgaria will have to continue to monitor the implementation of the judicial reform through a newly established ad hoc council, "which will contribute to the future dialogue" with Brussels.
