EU states 'great concern' over rule of law in Romania

(ANSA) - BRUXELLES, 22 OTT - "The evolution of the situation" concerning the rule of law in Romania in the last twelve months has been "a source of great concern", EU Commission writes in its latest report on developments in Romania in the area of judicial reform and the fight against corruption, in the context of the commitments undertaken by Bucharest in the framework of the cooperation and verification mechanism (Cvm). In the judicial field, Brussels expects the Romanian authorities to take "concrete steps - both legislative and administrative - to address the recommendations" already formulated by the EU several times over the past two years. Bucharest must demonstrate "a strong commitment to judicial independence and the fight against corruption, and to ensure the effectiveness of national safeguards and checks and balances", the report adds. However, the Commission remains "confident" in a change of course by the Romanian Government. The lens of the EU Commission on the rule of law will remain focused on Romania and the Commission reserves the right to take measures, "even beyond the parameters of the CVM", if the necessary measures are not applied.
