Balkans: Hahn, Skopje, and Tirana deserve EU negotiations

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, SEPTEMBER 14 - According to EU enlargement commissioner Johannes Hahn, Northern Macedonia and Albania deserve the opening of accession negotiations with the European Union. In an interview with the Montenegrin newspaper Vijesti, Hahn underlined that North Macedonia made significant progress. One o the most important steps, he added, was the signing of the historic agreement that ended the name dispute with Greece. The outgoing commissioner then said that when he took office five years ago, North Macedonia was in a deep political crisis, whereas now the progress made by the Balkan country and the entire region opens up a real European prospect. The EU, Hahn pointed out, will continue to support the path of the Western Balkans towards European integration, which is in the interest of the Union. Hungarian Laszlo Trocsany will take over from Hahn as enlargement commissioner. Trocsany's official appointment, like that of all the other members of the new EU Commission, has to be approved by the European Parliament. (ANSA).
