Bulgaria: working age population decreasing by 1.1% in 2018

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 15 APR - The population in Bulgaria, including the working age one, decreased in 2018 in a comparison year-on-year. New data recently made public by the Bulgarian National Statistical Institute (Nsi) show that the population in Bulgaria reached the 7,000,039 persons at the end of 2018, with a decrease of 49,995 persons or by 0.7% compared to 2017. The population at working age also decreased by almost 48,000 in a yearly comparison (-1.1%), reaching 4,201,000 persons or 60.0% of the total population, NSI said. According to long-term UN projections, in particular due to emigration and natural population decline, Bulgaria is one of the countries in Eastern Europe that will experience the strongest population decline in the next decades, the specialized portal Bne Intellinews recalled. "The data also revealed continued ageing of the Bulgarian population. At the end of last year the people aged 65 and over made up 21.3% of the country's population, up by 0.3 percentage points compared to a year earlier," the portal noted. (ANSA).
