Foibe: Tajani ready to visit Risiera San Saba, former lager

(ANSA) - ZAGREB, FEB 12 - European Parliament president Antonio Tajani, accused yesterday by Croatia's and Slovenia's highest political and institutional offices of "irredentism" and "historical revisionism" for the words he said Sunday at the foiba of Basovizza. On that occasion, Tajani hoorayed for "Italian Istria" and "Italian Dalmatia". The European Parliament president said today he was willing to visit the site of the former concentration camp at the Risiera di San Sabba in Trieste", Maribor-based daily newspaper "Vecer" reported today. According to the newspaper, Tajani has expressed his intention after the European Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc has reacted to his statement. Defining the "falsification of the history of the Italian-Slovenian border" as unacceptable, Bulc invited Tajani via Twitter to pay homage to the Italian victims in the Basovizza foiba, but also to the Slovenian and Croatian ones in the Risiera di San Saba. Tajani immediately replied that he was ready to visit the lager. The Risiera di San Saba was a Nazi concentration camp that was used as a police detention camp, as well as for the transit and elimination of a large number of prisoners: political prisoners, Slovenes, Croats, Italian anti-fascists or Jews. It is estimated that between 3,500 and 5,000 people perished in the lager. (ANSA).
