Serbia: thousand rally in new antigovernment protest

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 12 GEN - Thousands of people turned up in the Serbian capital Belgrade tonight for the sixth peaceful opposition protest against president Aleksandar Vucic and his ruling Progressive Party. Demonstrators criticise the policies of the government and the control on the media by the ruling political class and are protesting against what they describe as a decline of the democratic system in the Balkan country. The demonstrators marched through the frozen downtown Belgrade center blowing whistles and waving Serbian flags. At the front of the rally, people held a banner reading "1 in 5 Million", the slogan of the protest. Earlier in December, Vucic said that he would not meet any demands from the demonstrators "even if there were five million people" in the streets. The protests were triggered by an incident in November, in which Borko Stefanovic, an opposition politician, was beaten after a political meeting in the town of Krusevac. The next protest is scheduled for January 16th. (ANSA).
