Tourism: Zadar, Plovdiv, Tatra in NYT list places to visit

(ANSA) - BELGRADE - The New York Times, in its Travel section, has included three locations from the Balkans and Eastern Europe - Zadar, the Tatra mountains and Plovdiv - on a list of the '52 Places to Go' in 2019. The daily recommended the Croatian city of Zadar and the nearby islands. The Dalmatian city is "often ignored as visitors hopscotch from Istria in the north to Split and Hvar and then down to Dubrovnik", but things may change "especially with Ryanair adding regular flights from Prague, Hamburg, Cologne and Nuremberg, starting this spring," the New York Times wrote. Among the beauties of Zadar, its "medieval core", the seaside promenade and music-making "sea organ", created by the architect Nikola Basic. The Tatra mountains, in Slovakia, were recommended as an "under the radar destination for skiing and outdoors activities", but also for Kosice, a city that "offers colorful street art and plenty of cafes and restaurants," together with "perfectly preserved Gothic and Baroque buildings." The New York Times suggested to its readers also a trip to Plovdiv, in Bulgaria, in 2019. The "second-largest city" in the country is "a European cultural capital of 2019" and a "gem ready to shine," the daily wrote, recalling that "organizers have planned more than 500 events throughout the city and its region, including concerts, open-air theater performances and street-food fairs." Plovdiv features also "an artistic quarter called Kapana" and a "beautifully restored Roman amphitheater." (ANSA).
