International Conference on enhancing arbitral resolution of disputes held in Skopje

More than 125 representatives from the business community as well as lawyers and arbitrators attended the conference "Strengthening the cooperation between business partners by enhancing arbitral resolution of disputes - Modern times for Arbitration: Initiatives and perspectives" held in Skopje, Macedonia, on 19-20 April.

Considering that over the last years, many arbitral institutions have revised their arbitration rules with a focus on speed and time-efficiency, the discussion paid attention to the efficiency of arbitration proceedings.

The conference also marked the anniversary of the New York Convention on recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards of 1958, one of the most important documents for the development of international arbitration. The event gathered renowned practitioners from the world’s leading law firms. They debated issues related to investment arbitration, disputes between foreign investors and the host state which finds a place within the framework of either a bilateral investment treaty (BIT) between the host state and the investor's state or a multilateral treaty.

The participants agreed that issues related to arbitration should be further discussed and that the Permanent Court of Arbitration attached to the Economic Chamber of Macedonia should continue these activities in the future.

The conference was organised by the Economic Chamber of Macedonia and supported by the CEI Cooperation Fund.
