CEI Ministerial Conference on Science and Technology "Biotechnology for Healthy and Active Life in CEI Region" held in Minsk

The CEI Ministerial Conference on Science and Technology was held in Minsk on 26 October gathering representatives of 12 CEI member countries.

Under the title “Biotechnology for Healthy and Active Life in CEI Region”, the conference was meant to resume the dialogue of high-level experts on the current state and prospects of cooperation in science, technology, and innovations in the CEI region, with a focus on biotechnology. Participants presented best practices and opportunities for cooperation, which may be further developed under the upcoming CEI Plan of Action 2018-2020.

CEI Alternate Secretary General, Amb. Margot Klestil-Löffler, took part in the event and underlined that “There are outstanding Belarusian scientists that the country can be proud of. I know that the biotechnology sector is highly developed in the country. I think that in the future we could establish cooperation between the Belarusian science organizations, research institutes and the Area Science Park in Trieste (Italy)”.

“Unfortunately, Europe knows little about our developments and achievements. For us, this conference is an opportunity to highlight the innovative development of Belarus and to suggest interesting projects that can be implemented in the EU. The global biotechnology market is rapidly growing, and we have something to offer” added Alexander Shumilin,  Chairman of the Belarusian State Science and Technology Committee.

The event brought together ministers of the CEI Member States, officials in charge of science, technology, innovations, healthcare, agriculture, and food industry. R&D centres and non-governmental organisations developing biopharmaceuticals and biotechnologies for agriculture were also invited to attend, along with the European Commission that presented the forthcoming Horizon 2020 Work Program 2018-2020 in the health sector.

The CEI Secretariat contributed to the agenda by providing the audience with a thorough presentation of its mechanisms supporting regional cooperation, with a specific focus on its funding tools and expertise in designing EU project proposals.
