Coordination meeting of regional organisations held in Trieste

The 14th Coordination Meeting of Regional Organisations was held at the CEI Headquarters, in Trieste, Italy on 27-28 March. It was attended by the Adriatic - Ionian Initiative (AII), the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization (BSEC), the Central European Initiative (CEI), the Council of Baltic Sea States (CBSS), the Danube Commission, the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) and the Union for the Mediterranean Secretariat (UFM Secretariat).

The gathering was opened by CEI Secretary General, Ambassador Giovanni Caracciolo di Vietri, who illustrated the current initiatives for promoting regional cooperation, in particular, taking into account the Meeting of the Heads of Governments of the Berlin Process taking place in Trieste on 12 July. It was followed by a tour de table where the Regional Organisations exchanged information on their main activities since the previous Coordination Meeting in Budapest in 2016.

The meeting focused on the blue economy, security at a time of migration flows and in particular on the future of EU macro-regional strategies (MRS) and of the transnational cooperation programmes in the Community Cohesion Policy.

The core subject of discussion was introduced by Joerg Mirtl, Senior Researcher at the INTERACT Secretariat in Turku (Finland), who delivered a report on “ESIF contributions to macro-regional strategies: cooperation methods and tools”.
After fine-tuning the opportunities for a direct collaboration among one another, the Participants welcomed the date and venue of the next meeting in 2018, which will be hosted by the Union for the Mediterranean Secretariat in Barcelona.

A new Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the Central European Initiative and the Secretariat of the Danube Commission was signed by the Secretaries General of both organisations.
