Several experts and scholars from universities and institutes from CEI countries, namely Austria, Italy, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, will present a large panorama of the main factors of economic and social growth in the urban areas of a number of cities belonging to the former Habsburg Empire in the age of Maria Theresia. The aim of the symposium is to build an unprecedented comparative picture of the urban phenomenon in the context of the imperial era of the empress. While other urban areas belonging to the empire were marked by tensions in their development, the cities under Maria Theresia flourished and provided welfare to its populations.
Analysing the transformations of these cities can help to identify ways to mobilise the multicultural identity for the construction of sustainable development in contemporary European cities. Therefore, the project is an important contribution to the promotion of intercultural cooperation in countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
In the concluding round table session, the participants will summarise the presentations and also give an outlook on possible initiatives and events on the occasion of the tercentenary birthday of Maria Theresia von Habsburg in 2017 as well as on prospective studies of her personality and work.
The International Symposium will be held in Italian and English.
The event - organised by the Municipality of Trieste and under the patronage of the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Trieste - is co-funded by the CEI Cooperation Fund.
