Project name: INTER-CONNECT (Intermodality Promotion and Rail Renaissance in Adriatic – Ionian Region)
CEI role: Partner
Participating countries: Albania, Croatia, Italy, Greece, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia
Area: Transport
Duration: 01/2018-12/2019

Description: The project aims at promoting intermodal passengers transportation and revitalising rail use in ADRION regions, by supporting policymakers through tangible proposals for the alleviation of existing inefficiencies in the development of intermodal door-to-door transport. It is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and by the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA II) under the Interreg ADRION Programme.

The project supports alliances among key players in cross-cutting sectors. It establishes institutional platforms and boosts investments towards achieving sustainability and growth goals. Cases examined within the project are expected to have a leverage effect on policies, regulations and investment proposals.

More specifically, building on the legacy of previous projects (RAIL4SEE, RAILHUC, SEETAC, EA SEA-WAY), partners of Inter-Connect will join their forces and experience in order to:
  • Strengthen stakeholders’ understanding on the opportunities for ADRION regions (through the promotion of intermodal passengers’ transportation and rail use) by capitalising previous experience while providing them with practical guidance on exploiting this knowledge (intermodal hubs improvement, ICT, harmonisation of procedures, integrated provisions to passengers, legal/regulatory issues);
  • Train key players at different levels of policy-making on how to perform assessments reflecting on actual mobility priorities (individual and society needs) and how to efficiently cooperate for achieving sustainability goals (case examination);
  • Provide authorities with a generalized handbook of the most efficient soft intervention measures promoting intermodality and rail use accompanied by a “seed funding” enlightening tool.
The CEI-ES is mainly responsible for the project communication and dissemination activities and for defining a strategy for the involvement of specific stakeholders during its implementation phase.
