Kosovo: Pristina full of US flags, to celebrate army

(ANSA) - PRISTINA, DECEMBER 12 - Kosovo's capital city Pristina is full of US flags, ahead of Friday's parliamentary session that will vote on the transformation of the Kosovo Security Force into a regular army. Serbia strongly opposed this step, which is fully supported by the US. The stars and stripes of Kosovo's main ally are visible on all the city's main streets and avenues, in the squares, at the markets, in the parks. The leadership in Pristina never missed an opportunity to reiterate that the country counts on America's total and unconditional support. The US are the first supporter of the country's independence proclaimed on February 17, 2008. The battle for independence was led by the Kosovo Liberation Army, the Albanian separatist guerrilla that fought against the Serbs in the armed conflict of the late nineties. KLA fighters and commanders were Kosovo's top current leaders, such as President Hashim Thaci, premier Ramush Haradinaj and the speaker of the parliament Kadri Veselj. Prime Minister Haradinaj, in a post on Facebook, confirmed today that ''the KLA's battle was fair and sacrosanct''. The Special Court established to judge the war crimes of the KLA has convened the first four former fighters for interrogations related to their past. Even the current leaders might have to appear before the judges. (ANSA).
