Hungary: govt confirms former-PM Gruevski requests asylum

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, NOVEMBER 15 - The former Macedonian Prime Minister, Nikola Gruevski, has requested asylum in Hungary, the Hungarian government confirmed in a statement. Gruevski fled Macedonia to avoid a two-year prison term for corruption. Prime Minister Viktor Orban's office said that Gruevski "has made a declaration of his intention to submit a request for refugee status in Hungary." The procedure of analysis of the request is already ongoing. Orban's office said that Hungary considers "the assessment of the former Macedonian prime minister's asylum request to be solely a legal issue." The Hungarian government noted that "Macedonia is a strategic partner and an important ally of Hungary" and that Budapest "in no way wish to intervene in the internal affairs of sovereign countries." "In accordance with Hungarian law, the Hungarian authorities shall not provide further information relating to the details of the asylum procedure prior to completion of that procedure," the government added.
