Romania: around 24 people left country every hour in 2017

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, OCTOBER 13 - Around 24 Romanian citizens emigrated every hour in 2017, according to calculations of the portal Edupedu, based on official data from the National Statistical Institute (Ins). A total of 219,327 Romanians emigrated in 2017, Ins data show, with an emigration trend that is accelerating in the last years. In 2013, more than 161,000 Romanians left the country, 172,000 in 2014, 187,000 in 2015, 209,000 in 2016 and more than 219,000 last year. The analysis of Edupedu recalled that the favorite destinations of Romanian emigrants remains Italy (47%), followed by Spain (22%) and Germany and the United Kingdom (both 6%). A recent report of the Romanian National Bank show that around 20% of Romanians aged 20-64 are currently living in another European Union country, the highest percentage among the EU member states. A significant share of those who emigrated in 2017 were aged 20-29, more than 31% of the total. (ANSA).
