Bulgaria: more than 220,000 sign petition against euro

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 19 LUG - More than 220,000 people in Bulgaria have signed a petition to ask for a referendum against the introduction of the euro in the country, according to Vuzrazhdane (Revival), a non-parliamentary party, which organised the signature collection, Radio Bulgaria reports on its website today. Four more days are available for the party to collect more signatures and then to submit the petition to the Parliament. The organizers of the petition said that by joining the Euro zone Bulgaria will lose its national sovereignty, Radio Bulgaria reported. Joining the single European currency is one of the priorities of the government in Sofia. Bulgaria meets certain criteria to adopt the euro, among them the healthy public finances, low inflation and a currency pegged to the euro. However, the process of joining the Euro zone will last several years, after Sofia enters the ERM-2 exchange rate mechanism, the 'waiting room' for the Euro, and the EU' banking union. (ANSA).
